You have hundreds of photos of your dog or cat on your phone. Most of them will never leave it. A custom pet portrait changes that: it turns your favorite picture into something you can hang on the wall, give as a gift or keep as a memory. There are many ways to do it, from paintings to prints. This guide focuses on one of the coziest: a handmade yarn portrait you stitch yourself. Here are portrait ideas for every kind of pet parent, how to choose the right photo and what to expect from the process.

Why a yarn portrait of your pet?

Fur is texture, and yarn is texture. That's why pets look so good in punch needle. The soft loops recreate the fluffiness of a golden retriever, the sleek coat of a cat or the wiry beard of a terrier in a way flat prints can't. And because you make it with your own hands, the finished portrait carries a bit of you in it, too.

With a custom pet portrait punch needle kit, our designers turn your photo into a pre-printed canvas and match the yarn to your pet's coat. You fill the color areas loop by loop. No experience needed.

Six custom pet portrait ideas: solo, best friends, pet and person, the whole pack, first portrait, memorial

The classic solo portrait

One pet, one expression, front and center. Choose a photo where your pet looks toward the camera and their eyes are clear. It's the classic choice, and the Small size (16 × 20 in) is perfect for it.

Best friends: two pets together

The dog and the cat who pretend not to like each other. The two pups who always nap in the same spot. Medium (20 × 24 in) gives two pets enough room for detail. Choose a photo where both are similarly lit and close together.

Pet and person

Some of the best portraits show the bond: a child hugging the family dog, a cat on your lap, a walk at sunset. Count everyone in the photo when you choose your size. Our custom photo kit works for people and pets together.

The whole pack

Three dogs, two cats and a rabbit? Large (24 × 32 in) fits three to five people or pets. It's a fun family project, too: everyone can stitch their own animal.

Puppy or kitten's first portrait

They grow so fast. A portrait from the first weeks at home is a sweet keepsake that only gets more precious over time.

A memorial portrait

For a pet who has passed, a portrait is a gentle way to keep them close. Older or slightly blurry photos often still work. Read our guide to pet memorial gift ideas for more thoughts on giving one.

How to choose the best photo of your pet

The photo matters more than the camera. A sharp phone picture is all you need, as long as a few basics are right.

Pet photo tips: what works great and what to avoid
  • Shoot at their eye level. Get down on the floor instead of photographing from above. It makes your pet look like themselves, not like a tiny head on a big body.
  • Keep the eyes sharp. Eyes carry the expression. Zoom in before you upload: if the eyes are clear, you're good.
  • Use daylight. Natural light shows the true color of the coat. Flash can flatten fur and make eyes glow.
  • Show the whole head. Ears are part of the personality. Avoid photos where ears or the top of the head are cut off.
  • Simple background. A calm background helps the outline stand out, but we can simplify busy ones, too.

What happens after you upload

Our designers optimize your photo by hand. Fur, markings and eyes get extra attention, because that's what makes a pet recognizable. You get a free design preview by email within 24 hours. If you'd like a different crop, background or color, just reply. Nothing is printed until you approve it. Then we print your canvas, pack the color-matched yarn, the punch needle, the wooden frame, the guide and the hanging kit, and ship it free within the US. Your kit arrives 2–3 business days after you approve.

How hard is it to stitch a pet portrait?

Not hard at all. Punch needle has just one stitch: push the needle down, lift it to the surface, move a tiny step, repeat. A small portrait usually takes a few relaxed evenings. If you've never tried it, our punch needle beginner guide explains everything step by step.

Which colors will my pet's portrait have?

Every kit comes with a yarn set matched to your photo, usually 10 to 18 colors. A black-and-white tuxedo cat needs fewer shades than a tabby or a merle dog, so the number varies. The canvas shows exactly which color goes where, and the guide includes a color chart.

Dogs, cats and other pets: small differences

Dogs often look best in a slightly closer crop with the tongue and ears in view, while cats shine in photos that show their eyes and whiskers clearly. Rabbits, horses and birds work, too, as long as the head is large enough in the photo. If your pet has very fine markings, such as a merle coat or tabby stripes, choose one size larger for more detail.

A pet portrait as a gift

A pet portrait makes a thoughtful gift for dog moms, cat dads and anyone whose phone is full of pet pictures. Give the kit if they enjoy making things, or stitch it yourself and give the finished framed portrait. Great occasions include birthdays, adoption anniversaries, Christmas and Mother's Day for the dog mom in your life. You can ship directly to the recipient by entering their address at checkout.

Where to hang a pet portrait

A finished portrait comes in its wooden frame with a hanging kit, so it's ready for the wall right away. Favorite spots include the hallway where your dog greets you, above the cat's favorite chair or next to family photos in the living room. Because yarn absorbs light softly, the portrait looks warm in any room.
