How to choose the best photo for a punch needle portrait: couple portrait in an embroidery hoop with a camera illustration

The good news first: you don't need a professional camera. A sharp photo from your phone is all it takes. What matters is which photo you pick. Faces, light and distance decide how much detail fits into the yarn loops. Here's what we look for when we design a custom punch needle kit, and how to choose a photo that turns into a portrait you'll love.

Why the photo matters more than the camera

A punch needle portrait is made of yarn loops, not pixels. Our designers simplify your photo into clear color areas and match the yarn to it. Tiny details such as freckles or a single strand of hair disappear. Strong shapes stay: the outline of a face, the eyes, a smile, the color of a dog's coat. So the best photo isn't the most expensive one. It's the one where the people or pets you love are big, sharp and well lit.

Get close: faces should fill the frame

The most common reason a photo doesn't work well is distance. If the faces are tiny in a wide landscape shot, only a few loops are left for each face. As a rule of thumb, the faces should take up a large part of the picture. Crop out empty sky, floor or busy background before you upload, or let us crop it for you in the free preview.

  • Great: a close-up or half-body shot
  • Okay: full body, if the photo is sharp
  • Hard: group photos taken from far away

Choose soft, even light

Daylight from a window or a cloudy sky is perfect. It shows true colors and gentle shadows. Avoid flash, which flattens faces and can turn eyes red, and strong backlight, which leaves faces dark against a bright background. Heavy filters change skin tones and fur colors, so the original photo usually works best.

Keep the eyes sharp

Eyes are what make a portrait feel like someone you know. A slightly imperfect pose is fine, but blurry eyes are hard to recover. Zoom in on your phone before you upload: if you can see the eyes clearly, you're good. Sunglasses, hats that shade the face or hair covering the eyes make a portrait less personal.

Pets: shoot at their eye level

A close, sharp photo taken at eye level makes the best pet portraits.

For dogs, cats and every other pet, get down to their level instead of shooting from above. Natural light keeps fur colors true, and a photo where your pet looks toward the camera brings out their personality. A simple background helps their outline stand out. Long-haired breeds and detailed markings look best in a larger size. Looking for inspiration? See our custom pet portrait ideas.

Photos with several people or pets

You can put the whole family on one canvas, pets included. Choose your size by the number of people and pets in the photo:

  • Small, 16 × 20 in: one person or pet
  • Medium, 20 × 24 in: two people or pets
  • Large, 24 × 32 in: three to five people or pets

More than five? Email your photo to hello@custom-punch-needle.com first and we'll tell you what works best. If your favorite people are in different photos, send the one where everyone is closest together and similarly lit.

Old, blurry or sentimental photos

Some photos can't be retaken: a parent who has passed, a childhood picture, a pet you still miss. Upload it anyway. Older or slightly blurry photos often still work, because the design is simplified into shapes. You'll see the free design preview before anything is printed, and if a photo really won't work, we'll tell you and ask for another one. If you're making a portrait to remember a pet, our guide to pet memorial gift ideas may help.

Only use photos you're allowed to use

Please upload photos you took yourself or have permission to use. We can't turn paintings, illustrations or professional photos by other artists into kits without their permission.

Quick checklist before you upload

Photo checklist: what works great and what to avoid for a punch needle portrait
  • Faces or pets fill a large part of the photo
  • Eyes are sharp when you zoom in
  • Soft daylight, no flash, no heavy filter
  • No sunglasses or shadows covering faces
  • You picked the size that matches the number of people or pets

What happens after you upload

Our designers optimize your photo by hand: crop, contrast and colors. You get a free design preview by email within 24 hours. Ask for changes to the crop, colors or background until it looks right. Nothing is printed until you approve it. Then we print your canvas, pack your color-matched yarn, punch needle and wooden frame, and ship your kit, which arrives 2–3 business days after you approve. New to the craft? Our punch needle beginner guide explains the technique in a few minutes.
